Using Threads For Digital Marketing

On July 5, 2023, Meta launched a new social media platform called Threads. Within one day after it had launched, Threads boasted around 30 million users. Clearly, this networking platform is poised to play an important role in the world of digital marketing.

At Personalized Creative, we believe in staying one step ahead of emerging trends. Your brand might not be on Threads yet, but it’s important to understand the platform and its users now. As a future-focused brand, you should consider when and how Threads could fit into your overall digital marketing strategy. In this blog, you’ll learn more about Threads and how it works. We’ll explain what Threads has to offer as a digital marketing tool.

What Is Threads?

In many ways, Threads functions much like Twitter, allowing users to share a variety of content types. It requires users to have an Instagram login, and users must log into Threads using their Instagram handle. Part of the creators’ vision for Threads was to create a platform similar to Instagram, but designed to better accommodate text-based content. Users can create posts to share:

  • Text up to 500 characters long

  • Links

  • Videos up to 5 minutes long

  • Pictures

One intriguing key feature of Threads is its potential to easily connect with other social media networks. In the future, Threads plans to offer compatibility with other networks from your Threads account. This would allow you to post and interact on other platforms, without maintaining separate accounts for each app.

Who’s Using Threads?

So far, Threads has gained notoriety as the fastest-growing online service in history. That’s no small feat, and it means that Threads has an impressively diverse user base.

Threads has already attracted many celebrity users like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and Miley Cyrus. Wendy’s, Netflix, Lyft and Starbucks are among the high-profile brands to join the platform right away. But what about the average user demographics?

All types of users can be found on Threads. However, recent data suggests the following trends:

  • Threads is more popular among male users than female users

  • Threads is especially popular with Gen Z

  • The greatest number of Threads users can be found in India, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States

How Does Threads Compare To Other Social Media Platforms?

All social networking platforms share some key similarities. Most of them allow you to build a personal network with other users, share text-based and/or video content, and send personal messages to other users. But each platform also brings a unique set of strengths and weaknesses to the table.

Threads vs. Instagram

Of course, Threads is closely connected to Instagram – after all, you need an Instagram account to sign up for Threads. But Threads aims to focus more on fostering intimate connections within a limited circle of users. Threads’ camera feature helps to drive this focus on spontaneous sharing with a small group. The app encourages quick photo and video capture of everyday moments by minimizing the number of steps it takes to post this content. Threads also offers enhanced privacy features to help users share personal information within a more controlled setting.

Threads vs. Twitter

On the surface, Threads looks a lot like Twitter. However, Twitter has been known for its focus on news, current events, and politics. In contrast, Meta hopes to create a less polarized space on Threads. At this time, Threads is a great place to connect with your favorite brands, influencers and celebrities. It’s not a great place to get into a heated political debate – and this could make it a more natural fit than Twitter for digital marketing. Of course, Threads is also free from all the recent upheaval that Twitter has undergone since the Elon Musk takeover. Another key difference? Threads posts aren’t shown in reverse chronological order. Instead, the Threads algorithm determines what to display at the top.

Threads vs. Facebook

Threads is owned by Meta, the company which also owns Facebook. However, Threads’ look and feel is much more like that of Twitter and Instagram than that of Facebook. Text on Threads is limited to 500 characters, while Facebook still allows for “wall of text” posts. This makes Threads a more visually streamlined platform than Facebook – and therefore more appealing to Gen Z users.
